130 UK jobs lost as SeaFrance goes into liquidation

Sadly it was the end of the road for SeaFrance today when it was officially liquidated by a French court and told to cease activity, with the loss of 130 jobs in the UK.

SeaFrance, which went into receivership in 2010 , suspended sailings between Dover and Calais in November.

And today the French Tribunal de Commerce ended any hopes of it resuming operations when it ruled that a take-over by bid by a cooperative of SeaFrance employees was not acceptable.

SeaFrance was originally plunged into difficulties when the European Commission decided a £176m bailout by the French government was illegal.

Eurotunnel has expressed an interest in the cross-channel ferry firm, which operated four ferries sailing between Dover and Calais, carrying more than 3.5 million passengers a year. DFDS Seaways dropped its interest in SeaFrance in December.

A SeaFrance spokeswoman confirmed that Tribunal de Commerce had made the decision to liquidate the company, adding: “Provision has been made to ensure that all customers with pre-existing bookings will receive refunds.”
