Brittany Ferries l new range of ski holidays in the French Alps
Brittany Ferries is building on the no-fly boom by launching its own collection of ski-drive packages to the French Alps.
Self-drive ski holidays are enjoying snowballing popularity, and it’s little wonder. While airport baggage restrictions and charges make it increasingly difficult (and expensive) to check-in with skis and equipment, strike action and volcanic eruptions mean that skiers can never be 100 per cent certain they’ll make it to the slopes and back.
But unlike similar breaks which require travel via Dover or the Tunnel, Brittany Ferries’ holidays start with a relaxing overnight cruise from Portsmouth to Caen, cutting out the need for 3am starts, rushed overnight stops and midnight hotel check-ins.
Instead holidaymakers can enjoy a good night’s sleep in an en suite cabin as they cross the Channel. They’ll arrive in France at a civilised time, refreshed, relaxed and ready to hit the excellent French roads – making the resorts by late afternoon.
“Ski-drive makes sense,” comments Mike Bevens, Brittany Ferries Group Passenger Commercial Director. ‘You simply pack your car – as much as you can fit inside – and go.
“Not only do you avoid all the hassle and expense of the airport, as well as car and equipment hire, you’ll also enjoy much more freedom to drive around when you get to the mountains.”
He continues: “When you’re heading for the slopes, Portsmouth makes an ideal departure point. It’s closer to central London than Dover and offers fast, straightforward road connections from all parts of the UK. And once you arrive in our French port of Caen, the drive to the Alps is much easier than many people think, and shorter than from Calais or the Tunnel.”
The new range includes a choice of hotels and self-catering apartments at six top snow-sure ski resorts: Alpe d’Huez, Avoriaz, La Plagne, Les Arcs, Val d’Isère and Val Thorens.
While some locations are ideal for expert skiers who will still have the energy for lively après-ski activities, others are more suited to families with children – but all accommodation has been inspected by Brittany Ferries to make sure that it meets the high standards for which the company is known.
Packages include both accommodation and ferry crossings, making them highly cost effective. For example a 7-night break at Alpe d’Huez starts from just £152 per person for a family of four with their car, including en suite cabin accommodation on board ship. And holidaymakers will find prices particularly competitive for stays during Christmas, New Year and half-term holidays, when flights are at a premium.
