Bumper Bank Holiday weekend for Brittany Ferries

Brittany Ferries, whose ferries link the UK with France and Spain, will carry more than 42,000 passengers to and from the port of Portsmouth this bank holiday weekend.

Many of these passengers are returning home from summer holidays on the Continent, but large number are only just departing and today and tomorrow more than 8,600 will be setting sail from Portsmouth to Brittany, Normandy and northern Spain.

This is an increase of nearly 24 per cent on the same period last year, as more and more travellers, looking for a reliable, comfortable and sustainable form of transport choose ferries over flying.

Spokesman Mike Bevens commented: “Many bookings have come in at the last minute, suggesting that people want to escape the poor weather at home. The ash cloud has certainly played a part, but the exchange rate has improved too, giving travellers to France and Spain more for their pound.”

He continued: “We’re firmly of the view that the market is looking for convenience. Ferry travel offers that by allowing you to pack your car and go, avoiding all the hassle of the airport. But Portsmouth offers convenience too, with extremely good road connections to London, the Home Counties and beyond. And next year when the A3 Hindhead project reaches completion journeys will become even smoother and shorter.”
