New ‘Channel Tunnel’ cuts out major London-Portsmouth bottleneck

The opening of a new tunnel on the A3 tomorrow (July 27) at Hindhead will put paid to one of the worst bottlenecks on the drive between London and Portsmouth.

The 68-mile journey from Wandsworth in Southwest London to Portsmouth International Port becomes dual carriageways all the way, reducing it to just over an hour.

The 1.14 mile tunnel which took four years to build will cut up to 20 minutes off the journey, helping many of the 1.5 million passengers and 125,000 lorry drivers that travel every year through Portsmouth on Brittany Ferries to France and Spain.

Mike Bevens, Brittany Ferries group passenger commercial director, comments: “Portsmouth has long been the most accessible of all our UK ports and this now makes it even more so for Londoners. In fact Portsmouth is closer to London than Dover and with this new tunnel the driving time, especially from Southwest London and the southern Home Counties, will be much reduced.

“With the prospect of a traffic hold up removed it is now more than ever feasible to drive to Portsmouth after a full day’s work and catch one of our overnight cruise-ferries to arrive in France as early as 06.45 the next day. This really does make the most of your hard-earned time off work.”
