Nice try ... but were you taken for a ride by the Isle of Wight submarine?

Wightlink Ferries new submarine service SubLink, supposedly launching yesterday, caused quite a stir in some quarters.

SubLink was offering “an exciting yet efficient means for foot passengers to explore the waters between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight”.

This picture of the Wightlink submarine made the April Fool’s Day joke more authentic

The date iof the launch was a bit of a giveaway, however, and for those who were hoping to be taken for a ride, they certainly wee ... callers discovered it was an April Fool’s Day joke.

It was a good one, however, supported with a picture of the submarine, made more plausible by submitting that the vessel had been commissioned from the British Navy, as an out-of-service ship, and was in dry dock for the past three months, to refurbish. Wightlink even sensibly advised customers with claustrophobia not to travel on the submarine.

Mark Persad, head of marketing at Wightlink Ferries, confessed to SeaView:  “We decided to join in the fun of April Fool’s Day by announcing a submarine service between the Isle of Wight and the mainland.

“While it would certainly provide a different and dramatic way of travelling to and from the Isle of Wight, for now we will be focusing on our current fleet of ferries.”

SeaView was happy to join in the fun, but please don’t think we were fooled for a moment!
