Stena Line sees 40 per cent spring surge in hotel holidays to Ireland

Stena Line experienced a 40 per cent boom in sales of its hotel holidays to Ireland from Great Britain during the first four months of 2011.

The Stena Line holiday programme, which comprises ferry-based holidays on a bed and breakfast basis to a range of three-, four- and five-star hotels throughout Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic, experienced the increase during a period where air travel between the UK and Republic of Ireland dropped by 4.3 per cent.

The majority of the growth came from couples travelling to Ireland by car.

Bookings to both Dublin and Belfast showed particularly marked increases of almost 50 per cent, with Wexford and the Irish East Coast showing almost as strong growth. The programme also includes hotels in Donegal as well as in the North, South and West of Ireland.

It also includes a dedicated new “Luxury Collection” which features properties from the Culloden Estate and Spa, a five-star converted palace in Co Down, to 17th-century five-star Solis Lough Eske Castle in Co Donegal.

Dermot Cairns, general manager for travel on the Irish Sea, said: “Stena Line has been making huge investments in its Irish Sea operations over the past year so it’s very gratifying to witness such a significant increase in demand from Britain for our Irish hotel holidays.

“We’re currently constructing a new port in Cairnryan in southwest Scotland, on schedule to open this autumn, as well as having last year spent over £9million on an Irish Sea fleet makeover.

“Clearly these product and facility enhancements are making our crossings and convenient hotel holiday packages an even more attractive prospect for British travellers looking to visit to Ireland without the hassle associated with flying.”
