The Great War remembered with two new walking trails

Two new trails have been added to the selection of walks created in memory of the Great War in the Nord-Pas de Calais region.

At Fromelles - an hour’s drive from Calais, just off the A25 motorway - a five-mile route leads visitors in the footsteps of troops who launched a major offensive in support of the Battle of the Somme.

The trail was inaugurated by Ric Wells, Australia’s Ambassador to France, reflecting the huge losses of Australian soldiers at Fromelles.

Maison Forestiere, the evocative starting point for the Wilfred Owen trail

At Ors - a two hour drive from Calais via the A26 and on past Le Cateau-Cambresis - a four-mile route traces the final movements of the poet Wilfred Owen.

It starts from Maison Forestiere, the forester’s house where Owen spent his last night, and leads walkers through the woods of the Bois l’Eveque to Owen’s grave, and then to the banks of the Sambre-Oise canal where he fell.

A striking contemporary gallery dedicated to Owen’s work has been built above the cellar where he penned his last let to his mother. Visitors can contrast the cramped, damp, confines of the cellar below, then enter the light, bright, memorial where verses of Owen’s work are projected onto the walls while recitals recorded by Kenneth Branagh are played. It is incredibly moving.
