Tunnel opening speeds journey to Portsmouth International Port

A revolution speeding up journeys to and from Portsmouth International Port begins today (July 27) with the opening of the UK's longest land road tunnel.

The tunnel will dramatically improve journey times along the A3 -  the main link between the cruise and ferry port and London.

Hindhead Tunnel will reduce travel time to Portsmouth’s ferry terminal by up to 25 minutes

Historically, Hindhead has always been a bottleneck on the A3, with rush hour jams often adding more than an hour to driving times.

The frustration will end as four miles of new dual carriageway are opened, including the 1.2 mile, two bore tunnel. This will bypass Hindhead completely, allowing traffic to make the journey in less than five minutes.

Average journey times are likely to be reduced by around 25 minutes, but motorists driving in peak hours and on public holidays will notice an even greater improvement.

The Highways Agency claims the tunnel will offer reliable journey times, unhindered by the problems long associated with driving through Hindhead.

Martin Putman, Portsmouth International Port manager, said: “The Hindhead Tunnel is going to make the journey from London and the South East even easier, with less time spent in the car or on a coach.

“It should make for a more relaxing journey to the port, and leave time to enjoy the excellent new facilities in our brand new passenger terminal.”
