Dublin is THE place to celebrate St Patrick’s Day

There’s no doubt St Patrick’s Day celebrations belong to Dublin, which stages its official parade on Saturday March 17 – the day itself.
Irish Ferries Holidays reckons the cheapest – and most civilised – way to visit is for two couples (or four party-minded friends) to travel together in one car and choose a hotel with free parking and good public transport into the centre of the city.

For instance, the three-star Sandymount Hotel, less than two kms from the middle of town, has a three-night break, starting on March 16, for just £150 per person, saving £48 each.

This price includes accommodation in two twin rooms with full Irish breakfast and return cruise ferry crossing from Holyhead to Dublin for car and passengers. For one couple travelling together the cost is £186 per person, also saving £48 each.

Ireland still easiest option taking pets abroad says Irish Ferries

British and Irish governments have agreed that no checks will be made on pets travelling between the two countries, making Ireland the easiest option for taking pets abroad, even taking into account new EU rules on pet travel. The new EU rules state that pets visiting France (and all other EU destinations) should be micro-chipped, vaccinated against rabies and hold an Official Veterinary Health Certificate or EU Pet Passport.

However, DEFRA says: “As both the Republic of Ireland and the UK have had no indigenous rabies for many decades, compliance checks on pets travelling between the two countries will not be applied. Pet owners travelling with their pets should therefore not experience any change on the ground from the 1st January.”

Says Irish Ferries’ head of passenger sales Declan Mescall: “We carry tens of thousands of pets free of charge every year and that will not change. Ireland is still the easiest option for anyone who wants to take man’s best friend on holiday!”

Pets are carried free of charge, whether they occupy an on-board kennel (limited number, pre-booking essential) or remain in the car during the voyage.

Passengers weighed down with Christmas baggage will be pleased to learn that Irish Ferries have decided to continue carrying all bags free of charge on their ferries between Britain and Ireland.“Travellers on Irish Ferries may, as always, can take as many bags as they can carry entirely free of charge,” says head of passenger sales Declan Mescall.

Thousands of travellers will be heading home to Ireland this Christmas by car, with a boot full of Christmas presents.

“This time last year airports all over the UK were closed due to snow and ice and we rescued many a stranded passenger,” says Mescall.

“While festive sailings are already very busy, our cruise-ferry Ulysses has room for 1,850 passengers and 1,300 cars, and she has never cancelled a sailing due to bad weather, so we’re ready whatever happens.”

The last Christmas sailing from Holyhead to Dublin is at 14.10hrs, or from Pembroke to Rosslare at 14.45hrs on December 24. Ferries resume operating on Tuesday December 27.
